Abstract
AWE 2026 made clear that “smartglasses” is no longer a single product category. It is a widening field of head-worn computers with different social meanings, technical constraints, and use cases. This Field Note argues that the first useful division is not field of view, resolution, or degrees of freedom, but social posture: what happens to the wearer and to the people nearby when the glasses go on. By that axis, the 2026 landscape separates into Augmented Human glasses — presence-first frames that preserve eye contact and everyday social interaction — and Augmented Reality glasses, which provide stronger spatial capability at the cost of a more visibly mediated presence. A third bridge category, represented by emerging 6DoF glasses designed to look and feel closer to ordinary eyewear, may become the decisive design battleground. Drawing on AWE 2026 floor observations, product demos, and input-layer technologies, the piece frames Part I of a continuing field report on partial augmentation, open interfaces, and the future of human-AI presence.
